I thought about doing a crate and being happy, BUT

In my midlife I so want to build a motor again, once apon a time I took great joy from firing a new build, and am hoping to again.

I like your numbers any specs on your build?

I think at this point after doing some looking around, the 434 the guy had listed seems like a good deal but not sure what I am getting into with it.

Figure after Christmas I am going to grab up a Dart block and start there. Gives me some options in the future and build a 383 to start with. It is 2 piece seal so seems the most painless and I can still have a hyd roller.

It is a 72 400 block 2bolt that I had splayed mains installed. 10.75:1 compression. Roller lifters, roller rockers, Edelbrock performer heads and intake. 650 Holley. Built by Forest & Forest Racing.

Dart blocks are sold in two bore sizes 4.00 & 4.125 So one is a 302 ci - 402 ci The 4.125 bore can make 321 ci - 427 ci

canuckvetter1............ got the expensive bandaided block and had a 500 hp at the crank build done. The whole problem with his build is that the block is a throw away item as the bores ware. There is no over bore left in the cylinder walls.

I saw the standard sizes, which it states unfinished so I assume no matter which is orderd they have to be bored or at least honed.

Since 4.165 is max recommended starting at the 4.125 leaves little to bore again if I screw something up.

If I understand it correctly could the 4" bore not be bored out to whatever you want to a max of 4.165?

Or is that too much for a shop to bore to hence the different starting sizes?

I guess the other option would be a world products which can go 4" stroke but for my use the dart price seems quite nice.

All comes down to what you want to do with the car. I put 10,000 miles on the car in the last 10 yrs. The next 10 doesn't look like I will put much more than that on it as well.

If you're buying a block - just start with the large bore block and buy that rotating assembly with the 4.165 pistons. A dart 4.125 block can go up to 4.20" comfortably.
The 4.00" bore block is not made to handle a 4.165" overbore.

A 409" smallblock can easily make 500 ft lbs.
