Look for that number on the engine pad. At the front of engine on the passengers side , just next to the water pump.

The engine number will be there and the suffix code. Get me the three digit suffix # and I can tell you which eng. he has.

The suffix will look like this CDD or CDJ or CKY, and other #'s. You get the idea.

The 5th digit is the engine code
K=350, 200hp
L=350, 225hp
W=454, 270hp

You should also check the number stamped on the engine block where the water pump connects on the passenger side.

1st digit - Manufacturing Plant
2nd & 3rd digits - Month engine was manufactured
4th & 5th digits - Year engine was manufactured (remeber that some 72s were made in 71)
6th - 9th digits - Engine Code

CDH: 350, 200hp Manual, Emission Controled
CDJ: 350ci, 200hp Auto, Emission Controled
CKW: 350ci, 200hp Manual
CKX: 350ci, 200hp Auto
CKY: 350ci, 255hp Manual
CKZ: 350ci, 255hp (ZR1) Manual
CPH: 454ci, 270hp Manual
CPJ: 454ci, 270hp Auto
CRS: 350ci, 255hp Auto
CRT: 350ci, 255hp Manual
CSR: 454ci, 270hp Manual
CSS: 454ci, 270hp Auto

There is more information in the engine codes than this, I just don't have it.
