Car Wrap, I first got to know this process in the auto car racing world. When a 'Funny car' would recieve a bit of damage, it was quickly repaired and wrapped.
In the 'Old Daze' we would have to repair the fiberglass body and 'spot paint' the repair areas and send that funny car to the finals.
There will always be 'new technology' to better what is out there and for less dollars (I hope). I remember an alcohol dragster where the 'decals' were hand painted on and recieved full points for 'paint' in a custom car show.
My thoughts only... if your Corvette came with paint - paint it. I know that materials costs have climbed to the next stratosphere however, a basic understanding of body and paint prep will solve 75% of these paint job questions.
Do your homework, read about what goes into a 'paint job' and work with a shop that will work with you. I did the very same with a 1946 Fargo pickup back in 1978 and fell into a very lucrative career of body and paint.
Anyone try to wrap there c3? My paint is crap and thought wrap would be cheaper than paint. Want to go satin black. Murder it out and do the door jams myself with flat black rattle can. Any prices?
Here is the part number 180C-22-4800-30. You want 3M control tac with comply. There are other brands but 3M is the leader IMHO. You may want to buy some matte laminate and have a local sign shop with a laminator put the laminate on the vinyl for additional abrasion resistance and fade resistance. Laminate part number is 3M 8520.
I am probably aware of every installer in the PDAA and SIAG. Where are you located? I estimate an install rate of about $1,500 and one day to install it.
At $200 bucks for a whole car it's a pretty cheap, easy way to make the car flat black (or any other color the stuff comes in). I hate to say it, but I think this is actually a pretty smart solution they came up with. Plus made in the US, so not so rice at all.
Wrap is nice and shiney and all that, but should you not like it or when it's not done well, then $1500,- (or more) is a lot of money down the drain.
