After three unsuccessful attempts at 3 local walmarts in my area since friday evening to get the 5qt jug of mobil 1 15w-50, I finally ordered it online and had it shipped to store closest to me. didn't even have to wait in a line, got it from the back, called "site to store". Got to the store about an hour after I ordered it, you get a text to your phone telling you its in. Then with the number you get texted and a photo id. your good to go. this stuff doesn't stay on the shelf. It comes to $24.95+ tax. One quart of the stuff is $8.99+ tax at autozone
Why would anyone need 15W-50 oil unless they are running Nascar?
Because I never drive the car in cold weather and in the summer it will be 100F+. When I ran 10W-30, sitting at a few lights at those temps with AC on max the pressure started dropping @ idle. The 15W-50 stays at 30 PSI. Yes, I know that even 10PSI @ idle is enough, but I'm much more relaxed when I see 30 PSI.
pep boys isn't too common around where I am, what does it run ya?
I think it's about $8 a quart and the V twin stuff is @$11 . Good stuff but not cheap.
I run rotella 15/40 or Castro's 20/50 in my vette because I have 120,000 assthrashed miles on it and the heavier oil keeps my pressure @40psi during hot summer days with the AC on
For 63Mako
so the whole point of my post was to show guys where you can get oil that is "approved" for us with flat tappet cams/lifters for cheaper(walmart), I think that's the reason the shelves are cleared of it all the time. Its like the only one walmart has for our older engines
I have another make of car and the manual says 20w50.
the choice is not based on the manual, its based on what Mobil recommends for older motors due to zddp levels. back when the manual was made, the oil was different then

That is because the additive package in Diesel oils generally has high levels of detergents and dispersants which fight for the same space as ZDDP reducing its effectivness. So even if the levels are high enough does not mean it provides the protection needed. No Diesel oils are on the list for this reason.
The link I posted above will address those who like to see 30 or 40 #'s of oil pressure at idle and why that is detrimental to long term reductions in wear. Flow is much more important than pressure for protection and cooling. Thick don't flow. It is a good read and will change your beliefs if read completely through with an open mind. 90% of engine wear occors at startup.

And thankfully, Rotella is intended for and approved for (read the label) spark engines as well as diesels, so none of the above points are of concern.
For the OP- here's some good reading from somebody that actually knows something on the specific subject. Starts on page 3.
