Default Quanta engine paint, how many coats?

I have a lot of engine component painting to do. I'm starting with the oil pan mostly because you can't see it.

I'm on my 6th coat and it looks like i'll need several more. How many coats does it typically take to cover bare metal? I wasn't expecting 6+

Between coats I am putting the pan near the wood stove to dry it thoroughly.

This approach is too late for your oil pan repaint, but I like to coat bare metal with a primer before spraying on the color coat.

What do you use? I looked on Quantas site, they don't offer a primer or recommend one. It may be to late for the pan, but I also have to paint the timing cover and heads

No particular brand, but a name brand designated as a primer would normally allow the color layer to stick better than without it.

Alan,
I would say yes, I'll be painting the oil pan, timing cover, and heads
