Default Looking for a Pan - need advise

Hey Guys,
I am putting rack and pinion in my 74. The rack is bumping into the after market chrome pan in the lower section of the pan. Its about 4 3/4 inches deep. I need at least one mor inche of clearance. Oh, its a 350 small block.
Anyone know where I can get a low front end pan for this application.
thanks,
shopman1

I'm fighting the same problem. I have a '72 and the steering rack is hitting the pan. After research and a tip from a forum member, I'm purchasing a Milodan oil pan model 30700. It is a five quart pan, the sump is 8" deep, and the front pan depth in 3.5" (per Summit). If you need a racing pan, Milodan makes a model 31503 that has a different baffle arangement for oil management. It is appx 7.5" deep at the sump and only 3.875" at the front. Investigate and check it out for yourself to be absolutely sure. Most of the foreign made pans will not fit our cars.
Do a search in the "general" section for "oil pan". There is a great picture of an installed Milodan pan sent in by 7t2vette (model 31503).
Good Luck!

First time poster here..71 C3 Currently instaling Flaming river R&P. I have stroked 350 (383) Deeper pan. Same problem today,Got the R&P mount in, try'd to mount the rack on the support as per the instuctions, would not fit past the headers and A arms . Pulled out the mount again ..Arggg...and bolted up the rack .slid it into place again , no go, rack hit the oil pan. need about another 1/2 to 3/4 inch! Yikes...Ordered Milodon MIL-31070 ,after talking with super guy at Milodon. Its the lowest profile pan they have for a stroked 350.
I knew this was going to be a project when it started but holy cow. I will follow up with pictures and full install story when I get it all working. This is a great forum and I look forward to help others with my findings.

Default Picture of my Rack & Pinion Hitting the pan

I must say that the Teck at Speed Direct is very supportive and he feels that the lower pan will fix this problem. It just touches the steering turn buckle.
Guys thanks for the help and information!!! That is the power of this forum, it rocks.

Default Another picture of the side of the pan

My pan is like 3.5 in the front, the front is not the problem its the middle of the lower section of the pan that is the problem. That is were the Rack fits across it. So we need a pan that is low in the middle kind of like a C6 pan.

Default Milodon oil pan

Please note that if you get the milodon pan you will need the longer pickup tube as well.(MIL-18312 OIL PUMP PICK-UP) and it requires the thick front seal gasket.I was told by the Milodon guy that MIL-31070 is about 3 7/8 deep from the front of the pan to sump drop, no incline front to back. The flaming river rack sits just below the second bolt back from the front of the pan. So this should give me at least a full inch of clearance pan to rack...I hope.Should receive pan on friday, if Holiday activities dont get in the way I will mount her up and post a pict.

One more thing. If you use the Milodon oil pan and the Fel pro one piece gasket, you will need the the thick version. They make a thick and thin front seal version of the gasket.
And most likely you should get the longer studs or bolts as this gasket is fat.
It might be after Xmas before I can post picts of my install. Merry Christmas

here is the old pan. you can see where the rack support was rubbing.the rack itself sits a bit higher than the support, so it was a no go with this pan.

Here is the new pickup tube installed. Old one almost fell out when I grabbed it.Yikes.
I put the new one in the freezer overnight and then heated the oil pump with a heat gun for about 3 min. slid in about 85% of the way . Then with 5/8 wrench over the tube I taped it the rest of the way.Tap tap tap for about 10 min. NOTE: you really should take the pump off to do this. I was lucky and without HAMMERING on the pump it went in just fine . You might not be so lucky. If it wont move after a few taps, Pull the pump and do it in a vice. I still need to set the height.Need to get some clay.

based on the post #13 pic, it doesn't look like you need a whole lot. not sure if the new pan you bought can be returned. I would try it, since you have a new pan, the old pan is worthless kinda, so if you screw it up, no big deal. i would knock in the edges(corners)first as this is where the most resistance will be.

Doug 1,The shiny rubmark is from the rack support ,The support would fit in, but it was rubbing on the pan. Strike one. The rack iteself sits about 3/4 of an inch above the mounting support. So without pounding the crap out of the pan probably 1- 1.5 inches , it simply would not fit. At this point in my life I would prefer to deal with the problem in a more civilized way. ie: the new pan. I will be replacing this engine in the next year, so I will put the old cleaned up chrome pan back on the engine and sell er off. Putting the new pan on the new engine. So smashing it to bits is not really in my best interest.
