Default Clutch stud location

I have the engine out of my '79 and I want to do a few things to prepare it for the conversion to a manual transmission, even though it may be a while before I actually complete the swap. I have the stud that goes on the engine for the clutch cross-shaft and I want to install it on the engine. My block has two threaded holes that will accept the stud. One is just over the oil filter, about two inches in front of the bellhousing mounting surface of the block. The other is about 8 inches in front of that, just under the dipstick hole. Which one does the clutch stud go into?

I believe the one 8" in front of the oil filter is the one you want but to be sure do some measuring and which ever one puts the bar parallel to the firewall is the one you want.

Thanks, but that doesn't really help because the engine isn't in the car and there is no bracket to mount the other end of the bar yet anyway. Anybody know for sure?

Why can't you measure back from the motor mounts or some other point of reference?
If there is a 8" difference between the holes it shouldn't be too hard to determine the correct hole.

I'll vote for over the oil filter. At the worst, it's in the wrong hole, you have to unscrew it and put it in the other hole. The AIM will show it too. Or at least the location on the frame.

AIM doesn't show that. I looked. And its a bear to to get at with the engine in the car, and the headers installed. I'm trying to avoid those problems. I'm hoping someone will look at their car for me.

Here you go. On my '69 the stud is almost directly below the dispstick. I would think all C3s are that way.
For reference, in this photo of my engine out of the car, it's the hole above and to the left of the rear freeze plug. That rear hole above the oil filter is way too far back to work in a Corvette.
