I need redo the 18 y/o urethane LCA bushings on the '72, I wondering how to go about it, just as soon use rubber, but wonder if maybe new urethane would be easier.....and I don't want to battle the entire damn suspension.....
SO, to get the car up on stands in front , chain the jack to the cross support, jack under the spring pocket to compress spring, pop the 3 bolts off the cross shaft, and hammer away the shaft end bolts,
DOable?? or anyone try it this way, or is there something rong in my approach?? another thing is my hating to lose the damn rubber balljoint boots with my pickle fork hammering....
Just got a paper from Lars on this very subject. Super slick to do it his way. No press needed. Thanks Lars it worked like a charm! Of course you need to disassemble the entire suspension and have the control arms in a vice. I think with the spring compressed with a jack and hammering on the bushings while still on the car is a trip to the hospital waiting to happen. My .02

Another vote for a proper spring compressor, as there is a lot of energy stored in your springs, unless they unload compeletly when you jack up your car, whichever end of the CA's you decide to take apart. Also, the spring compressor won't partially unoad your jackstands as will using a jack. Do what you will, but safety isn't about doing what you MIGHT get away with, but about doing things in a way which is least likely to get you hurt.

I don't think I would try to change the LCA bushings with the arms still on the car, I think it would be a major PIA.
I have a proper spring compressor, but honestly, I just use a jack under the arm. Never been a problem so far.
As for the ball joints, I use this tool which doesn't damage anything, and pops the joints with ease; so easy that you will be amazed the first time you use one!:
