Default Front light wiring harness

I got sick and tired of my lights flickering off and on and some weird ground problem so I pulled my front light wiring harness.....what a mess. Bubba spent a lot of time up there.

The first problem I see is how do I get all the wires out of the fire wall where they pass into the fuse box. The drawings I have show a bolt that holds it on and it looks like all those wires that enter the firewall split into two chunks? Is this correct? Is the bolt right in the center of the whole mess in the engine compartment? I cant really see down in there very well.

Dan

If you had no bolt that could be half you problem, without the bolt the harness could have wiggle free form its mount. Yees, I believe there's 2 picies, one is for the engine harness, the other is for the front light harness.

There is a bolt in the middle of it. I can't remember the size. 3/8s or 7/16th if I remember correctly. Once you get the bolt out, the two pieces come out. It was a little difficult getting them to come out and separate.

Where are you at in VA Beach?

Hi Dan,
Besides the bolt there's also generally a LOT of hardened sealer around the firewall connection that needs to be released in order for the harness connection to be pulled apart.
Also, there are actually 2 separate harness connections there... the forward lighting harness and the engine harness.
You may be able to leave the engine harness connection in place, I'm not sure, but maybe they'll both need to be 'unplugged' together and then plugged back in together.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Did both of mine on my 70. One of the easier things to do although mine had the fiber optics that had to go inside pass compartment.

Scottw, I sent you a PM. Gunpowder, thank you, that was what I was looking for. I don't have that view of mine, still have everything in the engine compartment.

I do see the sealant there and it does not look like it will be very fun getting it out but I will try. I am going to start with the lighting wires and if everything goes somewhat pain free, I may try the engine wires next. Thanks for your help.

Well that was not that bad. Got the harness connection pulled out (about 30 minutes) and it is covered in some kind of tar crap. gonna try to clean it up some. Any idea on how to remove the wires from this harness "block". I still need to clean it up and then I will see if i can figure it out.

There are a few wires that are spliced (looks factory) and the black tape around the splice just falls off in a powder. Pretty old I guess.

The terminal on the end of this wire is like the ones in that plug. To remove them, bend the barbed part to close the gap and pull it out of the plastic connector.

Thanks 75. I got them all out and all the gunk scraped out. Now off to get some wire and see if I can find new terminal ends. I have all the new light sockets.

You may have trouble finding the terminals locally. You can find online sources, they are Packard type 56.

At first I was just going to make repairs but I think I am going to replace all the wires for the front lights. If everything goes good, I may replace the wire for the rear and then eventually in the engine compartment. It seems the engine compartment and front lights are really bad with all kinds of splices, wire nuts and electrical tape.

I will look for those terminals on line.

Got all the wires hooked up and put into place. Before I put all the lights into the lenses and run the wires along the fender and around the radiator I figured I would see if the lights would work. Well not a damn thing works! I guess I should stick to cleaning the car. I have all the grounds hooked up, wires to the alternator, and the security alarm horn and the one wire down to the brake line junction thingy. I have a feeling that the wiring harness connection is not tight at the firewall or I put it in crooked. I will check tomorrow. Shazaaaaaam.

Make sure the ground wire is attached to the radiator core support, with a star washer making good contact.

You have a lot more courage than me. I opted for both new wiring harnesses from Lectric Limited. Perfect. Never had a problem then or since.

I can believe it. Check the connector block inside the car. My 75 had the thick red wire (power) melt it's cavity so the connector wouldn't stay seated in the block. When the engine compartment side was plugged into it, the interior wire would push out, not making the connection (or a poor connection). Here's a pic (sorry about the clarity).

Figured everything out, the bolt to the back of the fuze box was not tight. everything is hooked up and now I see that my power steering control valve is leaking real bad, I guess the rebuild I did a couple of years ago didn't last too long. Going to pull that and see what is up with it. Thanks for your help on this repair.
