Hi Jay,
There's no need to drop the tank to install a luggage rack.
Just don't use an 8" long drill bit.
It's really an easy job once you get past the pain of realizing you're going to drill holes in that rear deck.
Regards,
Alan

I wish I could get rid of mine! Think about it before you drill into your fiberglass!

I would like to get rid of mine too. I've never carried anything on it, and it becomes something for people to hold on to, or to lay stuff on, or if the car needs a push the tendency is to use the rack (bad idea).
My rack came with the car. Think seriously before you drill!

I'd like a removable rack for my vert but will likely have to design something based off a bike carrier. Just don't want to drill or when I finally get to paint have suction cups sliding and scratching the deck.

I know the OP did not ask for opinions BUT... The rack is the best "option" for a C3... It's where my tops live and has carried many a cooler, chairs, luggage and other "stuff" ...

i removed every one i ever had. a real pain to fill the holes. every 2 yrs you will replace it because it will rust. never found one of stainless steel. use a short bit.

thanks for the input, for those of you that dont have them do u just put the tops in a bag in the storage area behind seat, not much room there compared to the 84 vette i had. and i am a little skeptical about drilling holes also

Luggage rack installation for a 77 can be found here: http://willcoxcorvette.com/repairand...elp.php?hID=24
The main procedure is pretty much the same except you have six holes and not eight on a 68-76 rack. The only issue this sheet will cause will be the forward and rear centering. I can get you this tomorrow if on one else post it... I have a 72 with a rack that was dealer installed. I should have the original instructions somewhere too, but I can't seem to find them.

There are frequently some for sale here or on eBarf
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-p...-with-box.html
I got mine from Ricks
There were "pins" on the racks that located the brackets and prevented them from moving, they can be added to racks without them (like a small screw with a sleeve around the thread"
I think Wilcox's link shows haw they are installed.
Racks are a lot like elCamino's, people like them or hate them, not many in the middle

Hi Jay,
In the early 70s there was no provision for carrying the tops on the luggage rack.
The owner's manual showed the method for storing the tops in the bags behind the seats.
I added a rack in 1971 but only used it one time.
I wouldn't drill the holes..... ever!

Alan
