I am having my sbc rebuilt and upgraded in my 76, car has 90k miles on it. Just heard from the motor guy, he claims it is a new motor due to the fact that it is so clean, no ridge what ever on the cylanders and the cylanders are round and true, stock bore. said it might be an old GM target motor. the big question is how do I tell if it is a re stamp because the number does match??? Stamp pad does look like others I have seen on the forum.
Mike you may have misunderstood my question. The pad is not in question, it matches my car. According to him the condition of the motor is too new to have the 90k that is on my odometer.
...The pad is not in question, it matches my car...
The pad can be in question if your mechanic is correct. You are going to need the casting date and casting number from he block to get to the bottom of it. You could also get the casting number and dates from the heads and intake manifold while you're there.
OK just got another update from the hot rod shop. The date code does match the car! yay! So evidently the block has been bored .020 so that explains the way it looks, so it is matching numbers. Its about all a 76 L48 can have going for it.
Sounds like it was recently bored .020 over and rebuilt. If there is no ridge, bore dimensions are good and cylinders are round why are you rebuilding it?
