What is the thread for the top bracket hole on the block? Anyone know? I can get an M7-1 tap to start pretty good. 5/16-18 wont even start. Thanks.

Thanks. I have tried both, including fine and course to no success. I have also tried cleaning it out and checking with a tap to no success. I did order the bolt so fingers crossed. If I find a solution other than the threads are jacked I will post. FYI, the M7-1 thread tap seemed to work well. Trying an M7-1 metric bolt tonight.

Your starter. Chuck it. The new permanent magnet mini starters are a significant improvement and cheap. Very few 78 cars are judged for originality. That is the only scenario where that starter has an excuse to live. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CHEVY-3...item1ec048339d

I've bought starters and alternators from DB in Tennessee ... HUGE coverage, great price & quality.

Turns out is was M7-1 for the bracket on the block side. Fits great. Hope this helps anyone else stumped.
