Here's a pic of the starter (1978) after my engine compartment resto from last year. Note the two starter bolts, brace on the right side and the ground cable. The ground cable connects to the frame. You'll also see another black cable of the same size that routes to the battery...these are the two you would not want to get mixed up!

Thanks. I have tried both, including fine and course to no success. I have also tried cleaning it out and checking with a tap to no success. I did order the bolt so fingers crossed. If I find a solution other than the threads are jacked I will post. FYI, the M7-1 thread tap seemed to work well. Trying an M7-1 metric bolt tonight.

Your starter. Chuck it. The new permanent magnet mini starters are a significant improvement and cheap. Very few 78 cars are judged for originality. That is the only scenario where that starter has an excuse to live. https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-CHEVY-3...item1ec048339d
