Upon finishing this winters rear suspension rebuild, I noticed one of my strut rods didnt have the same offset as the other one. I was able to get it in place, but am curious as to whether this may make it much harder on the bushing. Any help appreciated.
They will fit only one way, inside / outside. front side and back side. Hold the problem strut up to the mount location and fit it. Raising the trailing arm a bit helps in the alignment. Do the outside first, then diff side. The aluminum diffs all have the offset strut.
I marked mine after having the same trouble you are having.
My two strut rods are actually different. It must have been a replacement by the previous owner. One is more or less straight and the other has the noticable offset. Im not confused as to how they go in but rather if the straight one will damage the bushing prematurely.
I think the offset ones came about with the batwing and aluminum housing in 1980 and continued through '82. I bought a set of adjustables last year for my eventual rear suspension rebuild (finally in progress) in my '80. Apparently, alignment guys or bad luck with tire changers bent the two on my car and both on the spare rear suspension setup I bought probably to compensate for wear or bad bushings. I bought new, heavy duty, adjustable ones with the correct offset.
I checked the Eckler's website. There are three different part numbers depending on your year model. It looks as though the pre 80 models are straight. The 80-82 models appear to be offset.
