Can a worn or going fuel pump cause sluggishness and jerking at full WOT off the line from a dead stop? Rochester 750 cfm is the carb on a 383
thanks
ps. iginition components are all relatively new and tuned. Unless of course my china made distributor from local auto parts store has all of a sudden crapped out, but I don't want to entertain that as my problem right now.
Usually fuel pump flow problems will show up at wide open throttle after a few seconds. A weak pump will normally keep the bowl full at idle or part throttle but won't keep up at full throttle. So I think your problem is elsewhere. Is your secondary air valve adjusted right? Opening too soon will cause your symptoms.

well there is a slight delay in the jerking. I have been battling a lean mixture with coughing out out of the carb and so I did drill the jets a bit larger. But I don't think that's the issue. I did fiddle with float levels and am curious if that is still off too much? No, I didn't measure it, my initial adjustment was rasing it to provide more fuel into the bowl. I have subsequently bent it back down in several increments without any real noticeable improvement.
I want to check fuel pump psi. but I need to go to my father in laws in order to do that, as I don't have the gauges. But I figured if there was no chance that the fuel pump could cause issues in first few seconds, why bother checking the pump, because I know also that rochester's don't require much. top end is pretty good, I can get it to cough some if I try hard enough with total WOT.
thanks BK
I hope not too. this issue of jerking and chuging at full WOT off the line is a new all of a sudden issue. but the coughing through carb I have been battling for several weeks now....
Well in Florida is a company called All American Carburetors and they do great remanufacting, not just rebuilt and my q-jet was just $300 and came back like new so if think maybe a carb issue may want to look up their website.
Ok, thanks, I know you guys love your Rochester's, but if I gotta shell out that kind of money, I'm leaning toward something new. I'm getting tired of chasing this problem around. I'm ready for it to run like it should, and I'm not all that concerned with gas mileage either.
