Default manual steering

i want to get rid of my power steering and switch to manual. how much of a steering difference would it be between the factory style manual steering and a new rack and pinion type system? i know the old style would be much cheaper. my vette is a 77

I think it would be a waste of time and money, you will be using the same steering box. Go with a Borgeson steering box and keep the PS.

If your steering box and/or steering links (or front suspension parts) are worn out, then installing a new "rack & pinion" system would make a WORLD of difference. Of course, so would repairing what you have and bringing it back to 'factory new' condition.

If you NEED precise steering...because you road race your car a LOT and you want all the help you can get...go with a rack & pinion system upgrade. But, that will be expensive and a lot of trouble.

OTOH, if you are like 99% of us, rebuilding your stock system to 'stock' specifications and replacing any worn parts will correct the steering system to where you never consider a rack & pinion upgrade, again (at least, not in your lifetime).

It all depends on whether you want to "throw money at your hobby car", like a lot of folks do....or whether you just want the steering to be safe and predictable/accurate. C3 cars steered just 'dandy' when they were new; and they can do the same thing if repaired properly [for a lot less money].

Borgeson's are nice...if you want to spend a K-note (or so) on fixing your steering. Or, if your steering box is not worn or damaged significantly (similar to 90+ percent of all unrestored C3's), you can put a new seal in the bottom of the box, change out the old/crusty/missing organic grease with full synthetic gear grease, and adjust the box for proper clearances and lash PLUS fix all the front suspension & steering link hardware issues that you would need to do in ANY event, and you would be 'good to go'. As mentioned above, it's your 'nickel'.
