I am redoing almost all of my wiring harnesses, and last time I was under the center console I damaged the safety switch, I have a new one and was wondering if there is any advice on how to replace it. I have an automatic 1971.
I was looking it at it, and one screw is easily accessible from inside, and the other not so much.

So any good advice for swapping.
Thanks,

It's kind of tough getting to those screws as I remember when replacing my '76's, but you can do it. It takes some effort since you have to keep moving the switch until it's in the proper position so the back up lights, etc., function correctly. Just take your time.
One other thing I was wondering, when I last looked at it, my shifter was held to the floor with a few screws, is it possible to remove the plate and then work on the switch or is that even more work then necessary?

I recall loosening the shifter screws enuf to allow better access to the switch screws. You'll have to tighten the shifter back into position each time, tho, to chec proper operation of the switch re back up lights, starting, etc. Not a big deal, just takes time. Jud
I used a narrow chisel and hammer to tap on the edge of the one that is down in the hole in order to rotate it loose. Then once I had it out I ground a flat screwdriver slot with a dremmel in the top so i could tighten it again.

You need to remove the screws holding the shifter down - i think the is 6 or 8 - something like that. Then the whole shifter lifts up, and the lower screw is easily accessible.
