I went for a little cruise tonight in my '81, and the windshield started fogging up. I figured it was normal due to the mid-60 degree weather. I don't think that anymore.
It was like an oily film. I'm thinking refrigerant?? I tried converting to R134 last year with a cheapo kit from the parts store. The air has never worked since I got the car. Tonight is the first time though in two years that this film has occured. There was also an odor like refrigerant.
I need some advice here guys.......could this have been the last little bit of R134 leaking out? Would it have been on the inside of the windshield??
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My vote would be for the heater core. Any smell to it? A Sweet smell would also point towards the core. Not sure how the oil in 124 smells, but R-12 looks and smells like tranny fluid. Hope this helps
Yeah, check the heater core. Probably more likely than the A/C.
Thanks...as always !! Guess I'll check the heater core...that never even dawned on me. Never changed one before...but there's always a first !!!
Thanks again :seeya
That is a classic heater core symptom.
It leaks a bit, not enough to see a puddle on the floor, and when the core heats up the coolant evaporates and the vapor condenses on the cooler windshield.
In rare cases, it may be leaking around the heater hose where it connects to the core and then running back into the core.
For me it was the heater-core. When I turned on the heat to make the fog go away- it got worse. Sure was a fun-weekend to change it :cry

That's EXACTLY what happened. I told my wife it was just condensation and I turned on the defrost. It was like my windshield immediately turned white! Any detailed instructions on the steps to change this? I have the Haynes manual but it's like one short paragraph and not very detailed. Any links??
