Got the ’64 back together enough for a test day at our local drag meet. A lot of new things to test out but was still pleased with the results – ESPECIALLY not breaking anything! The engine I built is now a 383 that dynoed 530hp at the crank. The tyres are MT 275s that has very little clearance. They’re connected to my ageing Muncie wide ratio which is in turn connected to the Gary Ramadei built Super 10 diff that has 373 gears. Ignition is MSD with two stage rev limiter. I connected the lower range rev limiter with the line loc to help control things at the launch. This combination worked surprisingly well. What didn’t work was the drag pipes off the headers. So much noise and vibration couldn’t ‘feel’ the car. Suppose you could get use to it but at a later date. Still got some work to do on the carb and timing. Of course the driver needs to smooth up his reactions and shifting.
I only had two qualifying runs because I decided to change back to the street exhaust system and then had a red light on the elimination run. So the day was over fairly quick but it was enough to know where work needs to be done. The best was: reaction .566, 60’ 1.97 and the 8th mile in 8.523 @82.42 mph.
The fastest car was a huge chev that ran down the strip in 5.25. The most fun was watching a Cobra do a 360 at the halfway mark. How would you do that at the half way mark??? Was great weather and a fun day. Drove the car there and more importantly drove it home too.
Yes, I ran 18 inch header collector extensions and the noise is terrific. i just used ear plugs and a full face helmet.
Did you have trouble with wheel hop? I was wondering how you were launching. I found my 5 speed to be very hard to take off with my wippy 420# mono spring
Around here they have test-N-Tune fridays once the season starts.
Gkull, No wheel hop. Not in the warm up nor on the launch. The data logger showed there was wheel spin on launch but not all that much. I'm launching at 2300 rpm and the MT grip pretty well. Didn't feel any hop but with the drag pipes I couldn't feel much at all.
I'm not using a spring - well not at the strip anyway. The only suspension I'm using is the 13 pounds in the MT. I've packed the frame to the overload rubber bumper to keep the body off the tyres and half-shafts straight. A bit harsh on the road but gets the job done at the strip.
I would like to know more about how u packed the frame. I have considered similar things for the strip.

Gee, I thought you would want a detailed list of parts that went into a build. But for you blokes that don't like the search function - AFR heads, Steffs pan, Scat bottom end, Proform carb, Lunatti cam, Stahl headers. Nothing unusual or secret. There's more but I can't remember.....I'll have to go search for the information myself and type it in here.
Fair dinkum, I'm not being lazy but it's been posted here before. Just do a search and you can get all the detail you need. It's no secret. And if you need even more details PM me and I'll help where I can. It seems to be a good build but I'm no expert and I don't feel like saying this is what you should put together.
73C34me - I made a sandwich of hard rubber, wood and rubber. They sit on top of the safety loops which are bolted to the off-set swing arms. I had to gouge out two holes for the safety loops' bolts and then simply held in place with plastic ties. The overload bumper rests on top of this sandwich. I needed to keep the body of the tyres and this was the only way I could think of. If you need, PM me and I'll take and send you a couple pictures.
I went to adding a leaf and rearching the steel spring to make it an over 500 pound steel to get down the drag strip. I pulled the steel out and installed a 420 mono and it was instant wheel hop again.
