The only reason it should backfire is that it is lean...

or you are firing while and intake or exhaust valve is open.

Verify fuel supply

did you take any of the plug wires off for any reason???

if so check your plug wires

Best Regards, Jim

Where's your timing ....

if the back fire is through the carb .... its too lean ..... if out of the exhaust ... too rich

Did you change the plug wires at the same time as the carb? Sounds like you got a crossed wire or your timing is off.
How did it run before you changed the carb. What else did you do or change when you changed the carb?

double check your plug wires if you replaced them. verify #1 on the compression stroke and firing order of the other plugs. even the best of us have mixed it up. Especially if the install happened long after midnight.

I had same problem, after clearing up fuel and timing, came to conclusion that my valves were too dirty. at least I hope this was the cause, took some time this week to clean valves and port heads and intake manifold. few more things to hook up tomorrow and give rtv time to fully cure, will know for sure tomorrow. may try adjusting valves to possibly save a bigger job of having to pull the heads.

crossed wires will mess you up. we used to switch the center two on the old in-line 6 cyl as a joke. Will start and idle, but runs like crap.

update, cleaning the valves did not fix it. next step, which I should have done when I had heads off and valves out, will be the springs. Been conversing with TimAT about my load and all the stuff I have already done. This hopefully will fix my pig.

been having backfire through the carb at higher rpm and when giving lots of gas(throttle more open to WOT), got springs done earlier tonight, gonna give a couple heat cycles before really getting on it hard. dizzy, wires, fuel pump, carb are all new. timing has been messed with every which way till sunday and cleaned up the valves and heads.
thanks.
