Default What's one more cam suggestion thread? :)

350 880 roller block (originally a 300hp GM crate motor)
Fresh vortec heads (062) with LS3 beehive springs, dodge 2.2 valve seals, comp retainers, magnum roller tip 1.52 rockers etc
Felpro .015 head gaskets
leaving the pistons alone (and the rest of the shortblock most likely for now)
th350 trans with Jeg's 2400-2700 stall
stock 1979 gearing

Goals:
make some noise, and have a fun weekend/sunny day driver

Right now I'm looking at the
XR276HR
XR282HR
Edelbrock 2204

and I am open to your suggestions/thoughts on those or any others

Thanks!

Are your heads set up to handle the lift? I have the valve stem bosses cut on my Vortecs.
You might want to stick with the 276HR cam due to your gearing (probably 3.08) and 350 ci engine size.

I thought I read it was a 3.55 gear? http://forums.corvetteforum.com/1559740587-post2.html

And the valve seals are a trick people are using on other forums I haven't seen here... they are a low profile umbrella seal. using them will give a .540-.550 clearance, but I don't think I'd go over .525

I think he was talking something about the valve seals being mopar and allowing more lift in another thread IIRC. I agree with not going larger on the cam, I'd even say the 268 would be a good choice with the 3.08 rear gear, or atleast thats what my 76 came stock with. Whats the calculated compression ratio?

3.55 might have been an optional gear, but the standard, and most common, was 3.08. That's what my 77 had originally.

everything I am finding says the 3.55 was the gear with a th350 in 1979. 3.36 with a 4 speed. I will look for a tag when I get home from work

If you don't mind, were are you finding this? Is it on the car, or on the internet? 3.08 was what my 76 came with. Never mind, i reread and seen the link, i dont own a 79, but was under the impression that it was 3.08 as well. You could jack the car up and mark the tire and drive shaft, have some one rotate the tire one revolution and count the turns of the drive shaft, or record the speed at 2700 rpm in third. Then go to wallaceracing.com you can figure out the rear gear with tire diammetter, rpm and speed in the 1 to 1 final drive.

Right, 3.55 was the 79 auto ratio. 3.08 during the gas crisis years.
The XR 282 HR will match your gearing and convertor well

Google brings up a lot of info, much from this site. But here's an article from hemmings specific to 1978-1979 that states:
Corvettes built in 1979 used a 3.36:1 final drive ratio with four-speeds and 3.55 gearing with automatics.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the XR276HR and the comp cams roller tip 1.52 rockers and pushrod package. ALMOST went for the edelbrock rollin thunder 2204 cam, especially since it was cheaper than the comp. But at the last minute decided against it.
