There's a 1/2 mile event this June in Chicago drag strip on an old airport field
Would I look or be stupid if I take my 74 l82 there and do a few runs as I know there's gonna be a bunch of done up cars there mine will only have long tube headers and flow masters as my only mod
Would I get laughed at ??
I don't know much about a 1/2 mile track. My first thought was it would be interesting to see the results. Most 1/4 mile guys design their motor, trans and gears to max out at or near that 1/4 finish line. They will have another 1/4 to go in this race. You may be better positioned with your set up...
Nothing wrong with that at all, go and enjoy yourself, have a blast.
Agree with john!!! Have fun with what you have. Don't worry about what others think!! I saw a 2005 Chevy Z71 truck on Passtime the other day and it was completely stock and that was on the national airwaves. Thought the same thing when i saw it. He is having fun!

And if you run into some smartass, just tell them it doesn't take any more talent to drive their car in a straight line than it does your car in a straight line.
Ya I guess I just never been to one so I was guessing all the other cars were all done up maybe I should go and just be a spectator and see how it all operates
When I was young I too was intimidated to run on a drag strip, I thought my 'iron' wasn't good enough. Well I eventually did go and have must have logged about 187 miles - 1/4 of a mile at a time on a drag strip and had the best times of my life. Slow or fast it did not matter.
A old guy told me once that there were two types of people at a drag race, those who sit in the stands and those who race, were did I want to be ?
There's really nothing else I can add here since I agree with all of the above... but I will say there are/will be a lot of envious people (myself included) whose car is in pieces and would love to be able to take it out for a run. So go for it and have fun

Explain this 1/2 mile strip.
Don't go, its a speed trap setup. Once u pass the 1/4 mile timing light the police will be waiting.
If its your first time at the races u have to make a special appoint to only attend with only others that are racing for their first time - so everyone can laugh at each other fairly and equally.
Having been to the drags many times believe me i have never seen a nice shiny BB C3 corvette show up and die a death of backfires just in the staging lanes. Oh and something else when the corvette club shows up they are totally serious and sober - no one touches the beer concessions at all.
What i'm saying is that if u can't handle a tow home u better not go,
