I've seen all of those. I think ecklers was the most tempting. Now if you can use your internet skills to find me a meaningful picture of the orientation of the chip in the ecm, and not that garbage instruction from gm. That is just plain confusing and doesn't match my prom holder. I have scoured the web and only found one picture of the number one pin going towards the cover screw hole.
As much as I would like to help, I am not going to pull my battery and my chip to look at it. But I do remember from 1997 when I bought mine, the carrier that holds the chip can only go in one way. That is to keep you from inserting it in backwards. And the carrier has an arrow on it pointing one direction and the chip will have a "notch" marked on one end of its top. The notch end needs to be on the end of the carrier that the arrow is pointing to. Instructions will say that if you put it in backwards, you can/will fry the chip. Best I can do.
I can't blame you. If your 82 is running good, don't mess with it! My carrier was put in backwards when I opened it. I don't even know how he got it in that way. I was just wondering if the chip was even in the holder correctly. It runs so good with a bad prom that I can't wait to see what a good one does
I took mine out and put the original in and then returned to the Hypertech once upon a time. I remember I was very paranoid about orientation when I took the carrier out so I know how to put it back in properly.

I have the chip from when I put in the Hypertech. Looked at it and it says "Made in China"! Back in 1982? Whoa!
You can buy reman ECU's with a Hypertech chip in them and they say Made in China on the chip also. Guess Hypertech is the only one (Jet also?) that is making the chips anymore.
That link in fact contains the picture that made me question my proms orientation. Its the only photo I could find on google images. I am thinking that the ecm has a fault still as its not giving me the code 51. I might just get a reman ecm and not risk the old ecm burning up a new prom somehow.

If you look closely on the left side you will see the small "notch" I was referring to. Carrier is suppose to have an arrow pointing to that same side. And, it is suppose to only go into the ecm one way. But I do not see the carrier in that pic. My carrier is green if I remember.
My carrier is green, has no arrows or markings at all and had the updated 82 chip. I'm sure once I get a new computer I will get a slew of new codes to track down.
My carrier was definitely in backwards. I had to bend the corner of the ecm opening to get it out without bending the pins. I do believe the chip was fried. I reversed it and it made no difference. The same bubba that hotwired the fuel pump probably did that.
