Speedometer needle removal
My '70 speedo works but not my odometer so I figured a worn gear. I took it apart but can not get the needle off. I am afraid of breaking it. Is there any trick to this? I have tried pulling straight out, pulling and rotating etc. with no luck.

Get a small crows foot pry bar. Get all the way under and pry up. I broke my needle on my 78 as it was very brittle by pulling around the top. Willcox has replacements.

So I tried that but I was putting so much force on it, I was afraid I was going to break something inside. After more research, I applied some PB Blaster to the inside if the needle with a toothpick and let it sit upside down. Then I was able to hold onto the speed cup and rotate it off.
After getting it apart, I found the odometer gear worn. Everything else appears fine.

Little bit of heat from a lighter is helpful to pull it off. Still have to be super careful (and a bit lucky)
