Default 74 vette ignition switch

Hello,
Trying to figure out ignition swich control. This switch has a rod going down the colum shaft about 8 inches long and ends with a 90 degree upward turn. Turn the switch and rod goes dowm, turn the switch back and rod comes back up shaft. Problem is, this rod has come loose from the 90 degree turn and I do not see what it connects to. I think it would be something with a spring that would push the switch back to start position. Removed steering colum about nine years ago and now trying to put back in.
1974 Tilt steering
Thanks, Dave

If the rod has come out...and has nothing on the end...you will have to get into the column to fix it and replace the rod due to the special end that attached to a toothed slider that slides when you turn the lock cylinder.

If the rod has come out and still ahs the special aluminum end on it...you will still nedd to get back into the column.

There is NO spring in the column that returns the rod when the IGNITION SWITCH is removed. There is one in the column...but it does not sreve that purpose. The ignition switch is what has the spring in it so when you go and crank the car...it will turn back a bit so your starter does not keep running...but yet you still have powered up your electric systems.

Just to get the terminology correct. The ignition lock cylinder is up in the column head and is the part where you stick your ignition key.

The ignition lock cylinder connects directly into a plastic sector gear. That gear engages a die cast rack. The rack connects on a swivel of sorts to the long rod that reaches down the steering column jacket. The rod connects to the actual ignition switch. The 90 degree bend in the rod connects to a slider inside the switch.

The slider has a built-in spring return the pushes the rod down the column jacket toward the dash panel when you come out of START.

The T&T column uses a different ignition switch than the standard (non-adjustable) column. The ignition lock cylinder is the same between the two columns.
