Ok, So I'm going to the guys place tomorrow to start piecing this 383 together, I found a pair of Vortec heads on craigslist for pretty cheap. Do you think I should get those and throw them on instead of the 882 heads right away, or leave the 882's until I can afford some AFR heads? Performance wise?
Your flattop pistons will give you about 11-1 compression, ( aprx 64cc chambers on vortecs), and that combined with iron heads means you'd need better than 93 octane fuel.
They are great heads for their price and would also give you tremendous low rpm torque , but you'll probably want or need to use aluminum heads unless you want to blend some race gas into premium fuel.

I just bought a 383 short block for my 80. I am putting an Edelbrock Performer RPM matched top end kit on it. Heads, intake and roller cam setup. Should make over 400 horses with that.
Anyone know if you can fit a Edelbrock Performer RPM intake under the stock 72 hood? Im looking at building a pre86 350 with one of the Performer top end kits and want to know if I can get away without changing the hood. I'd run the Qjet and the open LT1 type air cleaner. I want it to go fast in general, both on the street and the strip. I want to be able to cruise it around town and if a little foreign rice popper wants to get smart I smoke the pants off him and take it out to the track and put down a decent time, sub 12's.

Don' care what anybody else says sub 12 second 1/4 mile times with a SBC needs 4 bolt mains, forged internals and internally balanced. Some get lucky, most don't for long. A BB Pontiac is no comparison. Heavier rods, crank, main webs ect. similar to a BBC, beefy.
Here's another thought. How about bolting on a Weiand roots blower. I ran one for about ten years, yes, on the street to and from work. It will put a permanent grin on your face. One more thing about heads - the 882 castings are best used for ballast. Do yourself a favor and get good, modern design heads

You will be hard pressed to go sub 12 sec with vortec heads also.
go with the afr heads and a hydraulic roller cam ,get the cam after you figure out your static compression ratio.a elderbrock victor or super victor would be a good intake for a roller cam .the alum heads allow for a little more static compression.if you make enough torque and keep the rpms under 6000 ,cast cranks and pistons will do.seen many 400sbc make 470/470 hp/tq with stock gm cast parts .

Victor or super victor won't fit under a stock or even most high rise hoods. GM seemed to think 1 HP per CI or a redline over 5800 needed forged crank and pistons and 4 bolt mains in these cars. If it is seeing even moderate strip use Im looking at going forged and couldn't in good conscience recommend a cast, stock bottom end. I would run a dual plane, especially if limiting RPM to under 6000. Not trying to argue but how long would you expect a 470 HP 6000 RPM engine to stay togerther with stock rods and cast pistons and crank. You recommend those $600 383 rotating assemblies all the time but have you used them? I haven't but I have seen a bunch of them come apart when the power or RPM gets bumped up. If your looking at AFR heads, Roller cam and sub 12 second quarters in a SBC put a bottom end in it that can handle the power you need to make running sub 12's. JMHO
