Hi Everyone, I wonder if someone can help me with a starting problem. It's not my Vette though - it's my Chevy Apache pick-up truck, but the mechanics for the starter should be the same. The Vette forum has a much bigger membership than the truck forum.
The truck is a '58 half ton stepside, manual 235 straight six. When I step on the starter button, it seems like a flat battery, with the engine struggling to turn over. It has a new battery, new starter brushes, all cleaned up, good earth and connections. The starter runs fine when on the bench. It won't start at all now. I know it's not a Vette matter but if anyone can help I'd be grateful.
If all the connections are clean then it is likely to be either the battery, internally corroded battery cables or the starter. I have had brand new batteries that were bad. Try jumping it. If it starts with the jumper cables then I would suspect the battery. You can also turn on the headlights and try starting it. If the headlights are bright and then go dim when you try to start it, that can be a sign that the starter is sucking the power from the battery.
