What is your opinion on using a thrust bearing (Torrington bearing) or thrust plate between the cam gear and block on a Mk 4 big block Chevy with a hydraulic roller cam..........YES or NO?
Since nobody else spoke up. You couple of things going on. The cam is held in place by the front timing chain if it a super stiff double roller type. Then you have the hellical cut dizzy/cam gear driving the oil pump. As oil pressure goes up, it pulls the cam gear against the face of the block.
some blocks have to be machined to allow for the T bearing or the bronze ring.
That is why I feel the front timing cover button is kind of N/A talk to race motor biulders about it. But is a moot point with dry sump.
both of my blocks have T bearings with crane billet timing gears
I've seen a couple that were chewed up on the cam boss, but both were flat tappet cams which are driven toward the back of the block by the taper of the lobes.
Why not use a Gen 6 cam and retainer setup? No cam buttons and the retainer protects the cam boss on the block.
Thanks guys. Did anyone drill a small hole (maybe .010) in the front oil galley plug to allow for pressurized oil to the torrington bearing or thrust bearing? Just seems it would be a good idea.
L88PLUS, that's a good idea, but I already have a custom ground cam in place. Had I known what I know now, I would have had the cam grinder use a Gen 6 core.
