This is how I installed a CD player into my 73. Unfortunately, it will only work with a Phase-Linear PCD-5000 (removed from my 5.0 Mustang). That's the only unit I've found where only half of the face plate removes.
Basically, I mounted the removeable faceplate on the gauge console and ran CAT-5 cable from the connector on the back (soldered on the wires) to the main unit in the jack compartment.
I had to make a connector for the main unit using a piece of printed circuit board; it slips into the existing connector where the faceplate used to fit.
Then I made a new blank faceplate for the main unit to cover the hole.
Factory radio stays in place and I enjoy CD tunes. I didn't want a changer so this seemed like the best method to get some upgraded sound. Put 4X6's in the dash and kick panels and 6X9s in the back.
This method could be adapted to any stereo with a full-size removable faceplate; just mount the faceplate somewhere else. Maybe make a radio delete plate and put the new faceplate over where the factory radio was?
ddecart- I bought the Din adapter from a local auto stereo installer. The Din adapter fills the hole very nicely. Thanks for the complement. BTW, notice where my "high beam" , "e-brake" and "service engine soon" indicators are? Since I don't have the stock speedo or tach anymore I had to find an alternate place to put them. The " service engine soon" indicator was added because of the '95 LT1 installation. The turn signals indicators are above the console gauges.

Desertdawg-The Blaupunkt works great, no skipping and great reception. My only complaint is the display. At times in certain light, it's hard to read due to the angle it sits at.
Cool idea Slixvett  I love to see somebody using their noodle and coming up with something different. Some of the older Pioneer models also only remove half of the plate.
