Why do I always have problems with these electric chokes? Sorry thats a rhetorical question. What happens if you don't run a choke? Or maybe run a manual choke? Is that bad for any reason? I know a few people who do that but I didn't know if that causes your engine any undo grief? Just curious.
I've been using a manual choke on a Holley carb for 30 years. Works great !
Several years ago I had a 442 Olds with a 455CI engine.
The automatic choke never worked right.
I purchased one of those cheapy conversion to manual kits. It worked perfect after that.
Since it was a Qjet carb, you had to remember to depress the throttle (and hold) prior to pulling out the choke. If not the choke would hang up on the fast idle steps on the carb.
It still had the manual choke when I sold it.
I haven't used a choke on an old sb Chevy engine in years. My vette does not have one. Takes about two stabs on the throttle to get it started cold and a couple minutes of keeping your foot on the pedal slightly for faster idle. I hate chokes on older cars, they never worked correctly for me.
I'm glad its not just me. I figured there were some people running manual chokes. The electric chokes seem gimmicky to me. My original Q-Jet had a hot air choke that worked pretty well. I also noticed that the electric choke would come back on if I let it sit for awhile. If and when I get a new carb I think definitly manual choke this time. No use spending any extra cash on a fancy choke.
By the way MasterDave I like the speed racer sig you have. I wonder how many people on the forum watched the original series(like I did). :D
I had the electric choke on my Holley for a while. It worked OK but everytime I sat the car for 15 minutes or more it would reset itself. I started it up and it would high idle for a while then I would have to kick it down. A pain in the staging lanes. I took it off. It takes about 1 minute to get it to idle right when cold but no more high idle when warm

Re: I hate chokes (TTop Tony)
I switched out the main body on my Holley to a Proform which has no choke or choke tower. Like Gordon & MasterDave, a couple stomps on the gas before starting and then a couple minutes to warm up.
Me too!!! I've been running my Edelbrock 1904 (electric choke model) for 5 years with the choke tywrapped wide open. The secondary lockout too. Starts fine and runs year round. She's alittle grumpy in the winter, but most of my commute is non stop. Once you've run a few miles, you don't even need a choke.
It sort of irks me now that I've paid extra for the electric choke model of a carb. Now that I've decided not to get a choke I can get the plain jane version of a carb and not the super fancy one and save a little cash. Now I just have to decide which carb to get.
My electric choke on the Vette runs as smooth as mayo. I love manual chokes tho. My old CB750 had one. Lack of a manual choke was the one thing the 73 Datsun 240z had over the 76 Vette when I was looking a sub for my ol' girl after the accident.
