Default 71 conv speedometer cable replacement.

I'm in the process of installing a kiesler rs500 trans and have to swap out the cable for the new trans.
How do you get at the speedometer to disconnect the cable? I tried from under the dash and then dropped the steering wheel and pulled the cluster out as far as I could. Still can't get my hand in there. Any suggestions or past experience to be shared?
Pulling the engine/trans was easier than this.

I recommend you remove the dash pad. It will still be tight but doable especially if you have already moved the instrument panel back.

I just replaced my tach cable and did it this way with 100% success. To remove the upper dash pad, you'll first need to remove the A pillar trim, the sun visors and the header trim. BE CAREFUL when removing the dash pad. I was able to remove mine by unscrewing all fasteners (screws) and then pushing the LH side/end forward, while CAREFULLY "bowing" the pad just enough to allow the pad's RH side to clear the A pillar when pulling out. If you bow it too much, it'll break. This will cost you about $300 and a lot of

Thanks for the responses. I removed the dash pad and was able to disconnect the old cable. I ran the new one but haven't had the opportunity to try and connect it. Won't be easy I can only get two fingers in there.
I have a bigger problem now, the top of the 5 speed is hitting the tunnel and have to come up with some way to get more clearance.

Hi r71,
Connecting the new cable is easier since it just needs to be pushed into place and the clip catches it automatically.
You'll here a click as you push it in.
Regards,
Alan

Reinforcing what Alan says, plus adding that it might be a good idea to "pull" a bit on the cable after connecting it. This will ensure that the spring clamp has gotten a firm hold of the cable's flared end. I'd hate to have you re-assemble only to find that the spring clamp wasn't fully engaged and the !@#$ thing fell out.

Good luck with this project, AND the new one too!
