Ben,
I had 58000 miles on mine......no warnings......There were some nylon bits in the sump, but I don't recall seeing any during oil changes.

aprox 122,000 miles but the engine has been rebuilt...dont know when...
i suspect this cause the block numbers match but it has 305 heads on it and runs awesome...smooth, no unwanted sounds and dosnt smoke or use oil...
i think some idiot said "this chain and gear dont look too bad, think i'll reuse them" :rolleyes:

More likely it's your harmonic balancer coming apart, but you might as well replace your timing chain and water pump while you're at it. A double roller chain will probably not fit in your engine, but you can always buy it and see, then return it if it doesn't fit.
