i began hearing a strange clinking sound from the front of the engine...
sounded almost like the fan hitting against something or something gone bad in one of the components driven by one of the belts...
it actually sounded like it was external...
barely noticable when idling but if i brought the idle up just a tad it got more frequent and a little louder...
i had some mechanic friends of mine listen to it and most just said that they didnt have a clue...
but then one of them advised that i should remove one belt at a time and see if it went away...
so i did...
belt one...no difference...
belt two...no difference...
belt three...no difference...
ok...now i have no belts on the engine and im still hearing it...
power steering, a/c and alternator all disconnected...
which also meant no water pump either (it was also suspect)
ok...from the front of the block forward (which is where the sound is)
not one external thing moving...
im guessing its the timing chain slapping the cover...
what do you guys think?
im thinking about a double roller chain...i dont race or anything but i DO put it thru the gears etc...so medium duty is all i need (i think)
opinions welcome...i could use some help here...thanx guys
sound like you are on the right track. Double Rolleers are cheap money and pretty easy to do. While your at it now it the great time to replace the water pump or pony up for the high flow water pump.
hhhmmm...i had thought about replacing the water pump...thats a good idea...
about the high flow water pump???
is it much more $?
who makes them?
where do i buy one?
thanx...
More likely it's your harmonic balancer coming apart, but you might as well replace your timing chain and water pump while you're at it. A double roller chain will probably not fit in your engine, but you can always buy it and see, then return it if it doesn't fit.
Wiend Edelbrock and Summit make them. Also there is this little rig that you rivet to the back of the impeller that supposedly increases flow. Dont know havent tried it . Parts store unit=30-50 bucks . Aftermarket high flows around 150 but they are aluminum , look nice, dont rust and FLOW MORE.
From Summit-----EDL-8812-for the corvette $161 and change.
Never had a problem replacing a single roller for dual in any late 70's early 80's block yet. Even used same timing chain cover.

how can i tell if its coming apart?
i didnt know that they could...whats inside of them to "come apart"?
It's basicly two pieces of metal with some rubber holding them together.
The outer ring should be almost touching the pully, about 3/4" from the timing chain cover. I have marks on my cover from where my balancer was rubbing it when it went bad.
Just do it...especially if the miles are getting up there. Not a bad job, nor expensive. I just checked my list of things I don't want to happen and all three: broken water pump, broken timing chain and broken damper are all on the list. So is broken heart, standing on the side of the road.
ok...now we're getting somewhere...
the one thing that did puzzle me is that the engine was rebuilt 30K or so ago (before i owned it) and it appears that they did an awesome job...
so i couldnt figure out why they would not have replaced the timing chain...
as i understand it, replacing the harmonic balancer is not neccessarily standard procedure...but changing the chain etc IS...
so...now im begining to think that they DID in fact replce the chain etc and rather its the balancer going bad...
any thoughts on this?
how can you tell if the balancer is bad?
Hi Signguy:
Summit brand (from Summit Racing) hi-flow water pump is an exact duplicate of the stock pump, and all your excessories will bolt right back up with no modifications. I tried two other brands and ran into problems.. Moroso was one. Great pump.. but alternator/A/C brackets didn't work.
Cloyes makes a great roller chain, and is about $30. Comes with crank and cam gears.
Good Luck
Wild thought, but was your engine rebulit with a roller cam? If so, how was the endplay set? By dimpling the timing cover or by grinding material off the back of the cam button? One method is correct. The other is not.
well...we did the job today...
here is the culpret...
took us 4 hrs doing a meticulus job...
cleaning parts and painting etc...
double roller chain w/steel gears...
new water pump as well :)
my friend helping me said he had never seen a chain with so much slack...
it was slapping the cover...
runs like a champ again!!
thanx ya'll!!
looks that way!
when i showed the gear to the wife she asked "where did all the teeth go?"...
i had to chuckle at her insight :)
of course, she had a good idea where they went... :yesnod:
Mine went a little worse....the camshaft stopped turning at 5000rpm when the timing chain started slipping. Bent Valves, bent pushrods, damaged cam.....$4,500 later a completely rebuilt 427 with double roller steel everything. Those nylon gears are crap.
