Default Crate engine choices

I have noticed a very large number of people going for ZZ4 conversions, but I have also not seen anyone converting to the 350HO engine. Why is this? Is it simply that you wanted the extra 25 HP and 20lbs/ft of torque the ZZ4 offers or is there another factor involved I have not weighed?

ZZ4
Horsepower: 355 hp @ 5,250 rpm
Torque: 405 ft/lbs @ 3500 rpm
Compression Ratio: 10.0 to 1
Block: Cast Iron 4-Bolt Main, 4.000" Bore
Crankshaft: Forged Steel, 3.480" Stroke
Heads, Chamber Size: Aluminum, 58cc Chamber
Valves (I/E): 1.940"/1.500"
Camshaft, Lift (I/E): Hydraulic Roller, 0.474"/0.510"

Intake: Aluminum Dual Plane
355 horsepower out of a small block aluminum head engine! The evolution of the ZZ series, this engine powers thousands of street rods, drag racers, and show cars. With 405 ft/lbs of torque, the ZZ4 is the best way to put a high performance small block engine under your hood!

350HO
Horsepower: 330 hp @ 5,000 rpm
Torque: 380 ft/lbs @ 3500 rpm
Compression Ratio: 9.1 to 1
Block: Cast Iron 4-bolt, 4.000" Bore
Crankshaft: Cast Nodular, 3.480" Stroke
Heads, Chamber Size: Vortec Cast Iron, 64cc Chamber
Valves (I/E): 1.940"/1.500"
Camshaft, Lift (I/E): 0.435"/0.460" Hydraulic
Dur. @ 0.050" (I/E): 212/222 degrees
Intake: Not Included

The 330HO, our lowest priced 350 performance crate engine, is durable and offers plenty of power for the budget minded enthusiasts. Dressed with chrome valve covers and timing cover, this is the perfect match for every street rodder's ride.

Note: This engine is not intended for use in fuel injected applications. For high performance fuel injection engines, please see our Custom Crate Engine selection.

This info is from Scoggin-Dickey's web site http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...tart&catid=120

The biggest thing that I would be concerned with if you want to boost the output later is that the ZZ4 has a Steel Crank and the HO's is Cast. The HO also lack the intake. ZZ4 heads are aluminum HO's Cast. There are a lot of differances between the two its just a matter of what you want. I recommend the ZZ4 highly even if you keep it in stock form the torque and HP will keep a big :D :D on your face for a long time.

Choice was easy for me: got it - brand new and still in the crate - for $2500 from a guy who needed $$ to finish other projects ;) :yesnod: :yesnod:

I'd go for the HT 383 personally. Much more potential, and you can't beat torque on the street!

Greetings,

383's are fun in a C3...Is it just me or is complete turn key engine places seem to be springing up more lately? I've been seeing them more than the crate motor places and the prices are about the same or cheaper than the dealer prices for the same thing, just that it's ready to be dropped in instead of having to swap stuff. Anybody had any experiences buying an engine from one of these turnkey motor places? Just curious is all, really don't need an engine.

Oh exactly! That crate engine is so cheap too. Hot Rod mag made that thing pump out a bit over 500ft-lbs in the typical street power band!

I went with the zz4 for the parts. I really like the idea of having a roller cam set up. This way if I ever change cams I only need to buy a cam. The forged steel crank and rods are more than worth the extra cost in my mind.
