Door latch challenge for a 71
New car to me that just went through a lot of work. Here is the weird part, if the windows are up I have a hard time opening the doors from the outside. Often need to lock and unlock with the key for 5 - 10 minutes until it works. If windows are down, the doors pop open when I press the latch. Any clues of what is going on?

What type of work is "a lot of work"?
I think there are 2 different things being described here.
With the window down does the key lock and unlock the latch ?.... you should be able to feel that happening when turning the key.
What effect does the INSIDE **** have on locking and unlocking the latch when it's turned?
Remember the lock (lock and unlock the latch) and latch (release from the striker) are different motions in the latch.
Is it possible that the interior trim panel is somehow pushing on the locking/unlocking rods and preventing them from moving?

The "a lot" means a frame off effort, but to a budget.
An aftermarket door panel was used - so that may be the cause. Will check this weekend.
