HI guy's, Finished breaking in the engine on sunday. Was a good boy and kept it under 3000 rpm like the engine shop said.> 600 miles<I changed the oil today >Mobil 1 <. I ran it about 10 miles and then hammered it.When I reached about 3500 it starts to sputter. It does not backfire.First gear was fine up t o 4000 and no problems but from second gear up anything over 3500 and it starts.Running to lean, Timing off, fouled plugs, bad wire.Did not check any of the above yet. work called. Thanks for any Info. Frank, >STW<
It could be a fuel delivery problem. Either a clogged or kinked line or a bad float setting in the carb. If you run strong up to that point I would check the fuel pump pressure, lines from the tank to pump and pump to carb and then check the float setting. I'm not a carb guru so I can't help you out much in the carb area. Timing is easy to check and if you have a good idle I would discount the bad plug or bad wire theory although it's possible that either one of these that are marginal could cause a high speed miss. One other area you might want to check is the sock in the tank. It prefilters the gas going to the fuel pump. If it's clogged from a bad load of gas or just deterioration of the inside of the tank you will not get enough flow to the pump. Look in the tank with a flashlight and you will be able to see it. I siphoned out a quart of gunk after getting a bad load of gas which stopped my car from getting over 20 mph. It had much the same symptoms as you describe. Good luck.
HI,Thanks for the help guy's. I will have free time on saturday so I can start checking around a little more. I may give it one more try and see if it gets any better. Thanks again for your time. Frank>STW< :flag
