this is the ratios for the Richmond 5 speed i'm running in my '81. If you have a 3.08 rear in your car, this transmission is perfect.

1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th rev.
3.28 2.13 1.57 1.24 1.00 4.79

I swapped out my 4 speed for a T56 6 speed that I bought used out of a 94' Trans Am for $750. Total was about $2500 for the swap, but could be done for less. Also, I sold my old 4 speed trans/ linkages/ shifter etc. which dropped my cost for the swap down to about $1200.

That puts it in perspective! Someone might think that the trans is the most expensive part of the swap!

I think I'll keep my car for a while, and decide whether or not I want to sell it for a four speed or mod it to a 4/5 speed.
Leaning rather fiercely to the conversion hey a learning experience is priceless! Plus, my first car.. it's rather sentimental. And it was a steal.
Let's meet up at some point after I get my differential put back in. I'd gladly tell you my "piece" on the matter.

Besides the trans, I bought a conversion kit to keep my barely used Centerforce Dual Friction clutch and Fidanza aluminum flyweel from my 4 speed setup (which were expensive), new flywheel bolts, pilot bearing, Hurst Billet shifter, Clutch Master kit, Clutch Master firewall angle adapter, driveshaft shortened and balanced, solid Spicer U-Joints for the driveshaft, 6 speed shifter plate, reverse lights/ speedo/ reverse lockout electrical plugs with pigtails, trans fluid, clutch fluid, new rear trans seal, poly trans mount, Bowtie Overdrive trans crossmember, and Autometer Speedometer.

The conversion kit I bought came with a stronger bellhousing with bolts, hydraulic throwout bearing, steel block plate, hydraulic master clutch kit, hydraulic clutch line, and cost about $890.

birdsmith,

Re: your offer, above.

I would LOVE to have that information/documentation, as I dislike automatics.

However, you must be pretty popular right now, as the "PM Nanny" told me your mailbox is full and is not accepting new messages at this time.

But when you get a chance, I too would like to accept your generous offer--thanks!

how much room do you have for the extra pedal? I have problems with pushing two pedals with one foot on some cars, like AC cobra (i have 15 extra wide). I do like the idea of t56, but the costs of a transswap are to high for me when I have a working 3 speed plus manual valve body in there-it will have to do. On the other hand it would have been lovely to drive more than 40mph without going deaf once!

My pedals are the stock 4 speed ones and they are fine for me with 10 wide shoe size. I suggest driving a 4 speed vette and see how it works for you. Here's a video I made for another thread. In the video, I'm on the highway at the 16:50 point in it in 4th gear, then going to 5th, then 6th. You can see the rpm difference on my Autometer digital tach/ speedometer gauge.

If the pedals prove too close, you can mod them a bit for some improvement. I had the opposite problem, but was able to do a little creative bending to better position my gas and brake so I could properly heel & toe (which, btw, has nothing to do with your heel). That said, I disclaim responsibility for anyone who takes this advice only to screw things up.

In any event, do select your shoes carefully, as they can significantly affect your footwork in tight spaces. You don't have to go so far, but I happen to wear a pair of Sparco driving shoes in my shark (have several pairs anyway). And, yes, they're blue suede...

The trouble I have when driving my 78 (I wear an 11) is that if I'm not careful with the angle of my foot I'll catch it on the ductwork when operating the clutch. Once I'm mindful of it, it's fine.

I've only ever driven it with slimmer shoes though. I wear thick-soled walking shoes most of the time, unless I'm driving one of the vettes. They'd be a tight fit in there...
