Hey gang--
Can someone elaborate on what it would cost (in terms of headache and labor) to flare the rear fenders a bit? I am looking to get some modern rubber, and I would like some FAT rears wheels. How hard is it to get the flares to look right? I want it to look seamless. Come on you flared people, let's hear about it! Thanks,
are those 2" or 4" flares. recommend a place to purchase.
I've been pondering the idea when $$$ allows, & what width rim would you use w/ out changing out t/arms
Those are the ZL-1 flare from Eklers, bought through Gary Gruhala (636)586-3909. They call them 2", but I gained about 2-1/2". I have 15"x 10" rims, but if you go to 17" you could easily fit 11" rims (depending on backset) with stock TA's.
I have flares on my 66.... but I bought it that way. I like them... would never change back to stock... one thing I would do is pay attention to the underside fit & finish. Mine are very sloppy, and I have to fix the mess someone else did.
That's a great job you did on the flairs and documenting it. I was looking for a copy of your project and now I have it.
Thank you. It is one of the jobs I want to do but hate to mess up my nice paint job.
Lasse - The flare work is done, but much work remains. I hit a little bump in the health road that stopped the project for several months. I have just gotten started on it again. Your car has remained my inspiration for the looks side of my project. I don't think it'll ever compete with the beauty of your ride.
Norval - I understand your reluctance to mess up a good paint job. When I stripped mine I found all kinds of damage and filler on the front end. I'm reglassing it now. By the way, if anyone is interested, I can do a page on the front flares as well.
71 Coupe - You got that right! You just hold your breath and tear into it.
myisa69 - They look fine flared rear only. I just had some other stuff I wanted to do (fiberglass sidepipe covers and spoiler) that seemed to tie together on the four corners flared platform. Besides, we voted on it here on the forum and front and rear won. :D
My next project is to glass the sidepipe covers in to the flares front and rear, giving somewhat of a ground effects appearance.

I cannot thank Rolling Thunder enough for the priceless info. and pictures
about the installation process. keep them coming!!!!!! I am at the point of staring at it and working up courage to use a grinder on my beautiful fenders. Shaking with apprehension as I look.
Bill - Are you doing rear flares only? The most difficult part is removing the skin at the back of the door opening. Just take your time, and invest in a good mask. Keep my email address handy if you'd like some long distance moral support. I'll give you my phone number too if that helps.
