Installing PS Control Valve
I am in the process of rebuilding my PS Control valve. I took the valve apart and it cleaned all the parts are spread out in the garage. The whole PS setup is from a parts car and the valve had been screwed all the way against the stop for shipping purposes. My question is where do I need to start at when I put this thing on the car. I am getting closer and closer all the time.

I am not sure what you mean by "where do I start"? I would obtain a rebuild kit from your favorite catalog company. Then I would get a parts breakdown, such as in the Chassis Rrepair Manual for your year. My 72 GM Repair manual has a very good description of the process. This parts breakdown is not in the Service manual. Perhaps Jim O'Shea has one over at http://www.corvettefag.com under steering? I rebuilt my 72 CV a month ago and it is a fairly straight forward job, assuming you have the exploded view of the CV. If not, then it can be a bit dicey. Also, the rebuild kit is nothing more than seals and O rings. If any of the components that slide are scored or scratched, you should consider rebuilding them. If the parts list starts to get to big, rebuilt units with an exchange, run in the $80-100 range.

Re: Installing PS Control Valve (GaryS)
I see I wasn`t too clear with my description. What I was looking for is when I install the PS valve, how far do I thread it on to the steering linkage. When I got the setup it was threaded all the way down against the stop which I don`t think is correct. It should be somewhere near the middle correct?
The valve on my '79 was threaded all the way down like yours. I believe it was the original valve, but I couldn't be 100% sure it was correct. Check the AIM just to make sure. When I installed the new valve, I threaded it all the way in like the old one. The alignment shop said they had to do very little adjusting to get the car right....Hope this helps...JC
Be SURE not to have your arm in the steering wheel when you firts get the conmtrol arm back on & you start the car. The control valve has to be balanced and the wheel will spin violently (sp?)
Better yet, disconnect the PS Ram from the body before you start then turn the screw to adjust. I'm guessing you know this already and your looking to set the screw somewhere close before starting this process.. Can't help ya.. I purchased a rebuilt one that was already balanced..

Re: Installing PS Control Valve (Koz)
Hey guys thanks for all the replies. I will leave the rod for the ram undone to avoid the steering wheel spin. I have got all rebuilt and ready to go in. PS pump, control valve and ram. Not to bad a job. Just keep plugging and it can be done.
