What's everyone using for starters?
I recently upgraded the rear end in my car to a 3:54. Well naturally the engine turns more rpms now. So she is running a bit hotter. Now I've got the classic starter heat soak problem. She has to cool down before I can restart the engine. I'm using a factory type starter of unknown origin. So what are you guys using to cure the problem. The brand would be helpful also.

i got a 98 chev. 5.7 1500 series truck starter. its light weight, gear reduction. its what gm used oem. Orielly, has it, but i went to a local starter / alt. shop and got a new one.
it spins the eng. really good. fyi

I'm using the factory Delco Remy 1108 400 starters on both of my '71 LS6's, one has a 3:70 ratio, the other a 3:36 ratio. Of course the factory heat shields are in place over the solenoid portion of the starter. Never any problems.

I got this on Ebay for my 153 tooth L-88 flywheel.
GM makes starter bolts to adapt these mini-starters to the Gen I small blocks.
The short one is PN 14037733 and the long one is 12338064. They have 10mm shanks with 3/8" threads.

I have run a blown 383 with a 'glide and 4.11 gears on the street with no problems. It had an MSD starter on it, although i dont recommend them as the front bearing died after 3 months...pretty poor.

I use and sell our own remanufactured OE starters....NO failures whether big block or small block...... or for that matter none of the other brand of cars either, particularly including those high horsepower muscle cars.......

I must be doing something wrong. Ol' Red still has the same starter GM installed in 69. (Actually Nov 68 per the build date). No heat shield, headers, and 12.5:1 compression. I did just have to replace the solenoid. The big contact in it got so nasty it wasn't making contact anymore.

(THE GOOD ,THE BAD AND THE UGLY).i replaced my original starter,of unknown origin,with a delco professional unit and installed it with a home made heat shield.no issues so far.THE GOOD-THE BAD-THE UGLY.(made in china)

Hmm, the heat shield must have been put there for a reason. If a gear reduction/mimi starter solves your heat soak problem then good. If your car works with the OE starter good. My vehicle would get hot and would crank hard and would not start after driving. 15 min or more later, it would start. I found out my timing was way off and I set it to OE spec. No more hot start problem. Have rebuilt OE starter. I do have a mini starter I bought a few years ago that I did not put on. I will in the future b/c it is much lighter than the boat anchor original. If your method of solving the hot start problem (be it chasing wiring, replacing starter, heat shields, or whatever) got the results you wanted good. Being critical of others ie putting a band aid starter on your car, etc, etc. Works for no one.
