Here's my dilemma... I've been deadset on getting Flowmaster Series 40 mufflers for my '81, but a Vette mechanic I know has mentioned another option that I'm torn on.
Here was my plan - change out the front and rear Y pipes with new stainless steel pipes, put in a hi-flo cat and finish it off with the Series 40s.
This guy I met suggests buying the hi-flo cat, but not putting it on until I need to go for emissions testing. He said he'd make a straight-pipe piece that I can switch out when I need to put the cat back on. That sounded pretty cool to me. It would give me a nice rumble. Next he suggests putting on Thrush Turbo 2 mufflers. He said they sound good and they hide in the well better than the Series 40 Flowmasters. I've also read that the Thrush Turbo mufflers add a respectable amount of kick (not to sure about that.)
Anyone have any opinions on this?? I'm wondering if anyone has Thrush Turbo mufflers on their Vette and how it sounds. Does it sound any better and do actually feel a difference in performance. I'd also like to know if the Flowmaster mufflers hang down from the wells as badly as I've heard.
Do the cat ......High flow..........But go with the 40's...........Man do the flow masters rock......Get and x or H pipe as well somewhere in the system.....As close to the front as possible
Are those Thrushers flat or what? My 40's are not very thick at all, I can't image them being more than an inch or two thinner.
And yes they do rock!
Had a buddy who did the replacement section deal. Took him all of 20 minutes twice a year, once to put the cat on and once to take it off. Huge difference in performance with his 4 litre comanche.
Well, I've never seen the Thrush Turbos, so I couldn't tell you how thin or thick they are.
The guy said that 40s are visible when standing behind the car, but the Turbos aren't. Not really a big deal if the 40s don't hang too low. Anyone have the 40s that think they look bad cuz they might be too visible from behind?
What about resonance. I've heard that it's pretty bad in the 55 to 65 MPH range. I know it sounds cool, but how bad is the resonance? I'm sure it depends on the engine. My '81 is the original 350 and very stock.
I have flowmaster 40s on my '79. Your mechanic is right, they are pretty visible from behind, but I don't think it looks bad (but thats just my personal opinion). Unfortunately I don't have a picture of what my car looks like with the mufflers installed. As for the sound, inside the car they don't sound any different than what I had before, except I do notice a little bit of a louder rumble. Since I'm the only one who I let drive my car I haven't heard what they ound like from the outside, but according to my friends and everyone else they do have a sound that fits very well with my Corvette.
The other day I drove my '79 Vette from 1100 miles New York to Tennessee and my only complaint about the mufflers is that they can really get to you on long drives. Also don't expect to be able to hear the radio too well if you have the windows open and you are doing about 60 mph without cranking the volume to the point of making yourself deaf.
I never set off car alarms before I had my flowmaster 40s, but now I set them off with a certain degree of regularity.
As far as performance is concerned, I didn't notice any difference with the flowmaster 40s. However, I'm not sure what I had installed on my car before.
Overall I'm very happy with my flowmaster 40s and would definately buy them for my car again.
Yeah, that makes sense. Anyone with an '80 through '82 have the 40s on their Vette? I'm sure our rear end is also slightly different than the '79 and early to mid '70s.
I would think that more people on the forum would have 40s on their Vette since Flowmaster has such a strong following on this forum. The Flowmaster following rivals the Zaino cult! :yesnod:
My 1980 has Flowmaster Delta 40's, true dual 2.5" pipe, H pipe, no cats, and headers and it looks like this:
As you can see they tuck up under there perfectly. Just go to an exhaust shop who knows what they are doing. It sounds awesome. There is resonace at 1600-1900 rpm but I like it. Don't get em if you don't want loud!!! You can't go wrong with Flowmaster!
ive got Flowmaster 40's on mine and i love them...
loud but not too loud...
nice mellow rumble...
the guys painted mine black before putting them on and they dont show unless you bend down to see them :D
Get and x or H pipe as well somewhere in the system.....As close to the front as possible
huh?? whats that all about?
please explain...
thanx
that is to balance the Flow of the exhaust and Also to cut down on the loundness and boost the power of the engine.........They say it is good for an additional 5 to 10hp.......in some cases

It's amazing how much an "H" pipe can reduce the volume, even with minimalist mufflers.

Take a look at the last picture in my post above. That's a H pipe right behind the trans cross member. Flowmaster tech said it reduces resonace and increases hp by balancing the pressure between each exhaust pipe.
