Someone that has done this will come along. There is more to it then the cam. They usually bore out the TBI's, larger injectors, port the manifold, 85 fuel pump, etc. You can play a bit.
Beerhunter - this is the list compiled/sent to me when i asked about CFI upgreades:
- Remove hood flapper for cold air always
- Port CFI intake or buy Reneage intake
- Dart Iron Eagel/Edelbrock 165cc port 72 cc chamber heads
- 2030 or 2040 Cam
- Full roller rockers
- Dual exhaust
- Hi perf cat or tesxt pipe
- lower backpressure mufflers
- headers
- 85 Vette fuel pump
- Remove smog if legal in your area
I installed a Comp Cam 12-249-4 (XE249H) with 1.6 roller rockers. The stock ECM handles it just fine. Along with a number of other changes, it performs quite nicely now. Go here (http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c3-t...crossfire.html) for some detail.
Keep in mind the 82-84 intake has been flow tested and was found to flow well below 600cfm..... Correcting this bottleneck will have the biggest effect and allow other upgrades to work better.... and if you care at all about performance or gas mileage ditch the idea of the Thumpr its designed primarily to fake the sound of a much more aggressive cam.... I really doubt you could get it to even run in a computer controller engine since it throws everything so out of wack to achieve the lopy idle. People have a hard enough time in non computer controlled vehicles getting the timing right and such so it runs reliably.
Btw I waited like 5 years for the "renegade" cfi to come out of pre order/ back order status and gave up....they have been advertised under two different names (x ram) and both seem to be "buy now get delivery when the next manufacturing run happens"......someday.

I got my Renegade manifold last year and it was worth the wait. It did take me over a year of emails and calls to finally get it but I have been happy with it.
I ordered my Renegade Dec 2009 and it was delivered Dec 2010 (nice Christmas present)! Do purchase one, it makes quite a difference, especially with a cam and head change. But be patient, the DCS folks are real nice and will keep you apprised of progress.

Wished I had saw people who actually got one....I saw lots of posts from people angry because of the back order times that kept growing when I Google it and posts from people who ordered the x ram only to have the distributor go MIA with their money it seems.... I no longer have my 84 but it was very reliable for the 13 years I drove it.
I changed to a hotter cam no problems .crane cams has a couple of choices that will not have a proplem with the computer.the biggest improvment will be the intake and the heads.you can port out your intake for a lot of hp gain but the new renegade intake is the best out there so far.
Comp cams, edelbrock , crane cams.... All have cams for our CFI or you can go with an RV/towing/4x4 cam with a duration under 205 @.050 . Lift isn't much of a factor.
Lumpy idle causes the map sensor to go crazy. Some have been able to tune the CFI to handle hotter cams but I don't think there is much to be gained unless you're going all out with ported TBs and manifold.
seriously thinking of pulling all cfi related parts, motor and trans and storing it nicely only has 56k on it .would love to drop in my 450 horse smallblock from another project with a 4 or 5 speed stick , but I think my brain is drooling bringing back memories of my early 20's ripping up backroads with my camaros and such. torn between keeping it somewhat origional or going over board ...once you cross the line could be no returning ???
