Default Power window problem 1978 C3

I have to replace the regulator gear on the power window on the passenger side door. I took the rivits out and the regulator assembly is loose, but the book says to disconnect from the rails. My X-ray vision is failing on me and i have no idea how to the the assembly out of the door. Is there anyone out there that can help me?

If the assembly is loose. Here is what you do. Make sure you still have power to the motor. Make sure some part of the metal or the regulator is touching the door frame, this is how it grounds. Use the power window switch to compress the regulator to a size small enough to fit through the access port that I assume you already have the door off of. It comes out through there.

Replace the rivits with bolts. Make sure the bolts are the exact same thickness as the holes the rivits were in. You don't want to drill them. Make sure the bolts are the just long enough for the nut to go one, bolts too long will obstruct the regulator when you power the window up or down.

what happens to the window when you compress the mechanism... do I need to pull the window out of the door before I compress the mechanism?

The regulator has to be free from the window. You should have done this before you drilled the rivits.

You have to remove the window from the rear track. undo the stop on the rear track and pull the window up past the track. Then slide it off the center track that attaches to the regulator.

I'll get you a picture.

See how the middle track attaches to the regulator and the rear track? You need to lift off the rear track. You need to remove the upper stop on the rear track. The front one can stay but be careful the glass will drove once removed. Realistically you should take the whole window off both tracks but and can be done without.

Remember the track that's attached to the window does not have to be removed from the glass. The scissor part of the regulator has wheels on the ends that roll in that track. The key is to remove the small track piece that's right behind the arm rest. Slide it off the wheel on the lower scissor part of the regulator. By titling the glass back and forth you can get the upper part of the scissor off the long track that is attached to the window.

The tricky part is getting the long scissor part off the track attached to the glass. As you can see its long. Also note its so long that you won't be able to do it by sliding it towards the front of the car. It has to slide off towards the back of the car. that's why I said you need to free the window from the rear up/down track...the roller that runs unp and down this track is in the way. Once you have pulled the window up and out of the up/down track you can free the entire regulator from the door, motor and all and by hand push it towards the rear until the wheel on the upper part of the long scissor clear the track attached to the bottom of the glass. Make Sense?

Watch the glass now....nothing is holding it in place and it will drop....carful not to damage it.

CAUTION....DO NOT REMOVE THE MOTOR FROM THE REGULATOR WITH OUT BRACING THE REGULATOR. ONCE THE MOTOR IS OFF THAT POWERFUL SPRING WILL COMPRESS IT. FINGERS IN THE WAY COULD BE LOST.

There is a hole in the scissor part of the regulator that is there for a bolt to brace it from compressing. once you have the regulator out plug it back in, make sure any part of the regulator is touching any part of the metal on the door (needed to ground) and power the regulator to align the holes for the bolt to brace
