Default Temp - Am I reading wrong?

I've been trying to sort out the reason why my temp gauge seems to read high. basically, this is how it looks from left to right; starting on the left with the number 100, then just right of that a wide line, then a narrow line, then another wide line, and then straight up a narrow line with the number 200 directly below, then another narrow line, and then a very wide redish orange line starts just off the right side of the number 200, then redish line is about 1/4" long and then followed by the number 260. My initial assumption was that the line straight up with the number 200 directly below was 200 degrees then going to the right would be 220, 240 (start of the redish line) and then 260 (at the end of the redish line). I was waiting to pick my wife up from work with the Vette so I decided to read the owners manual. The manual says that the red line starts at 200 degrees. If this is the case then my sending unit is reading to my gauge 180 (which matches 175 degrees that I read with a thermometer. Does this sound right to you guys? If so, then the gauge would read the mark just to the right of the number instead of directly above the number. Anyone have any comments? Maybe all of us who think that our sending units and gauges are wrong are just reading the gauge wrong. Let's hear some input into this theory. Don't you just love trying to figure out these cars?
