Default gas tank strainer

tech question on gas tank strainer? what does it take to change out the strainer? hopefully I don't have to remove gas, sending unit, etc... Is there a way I can reach down through the fill neck and pop off the old strainer and than push on the new strainer?
thanks
Mike

Good question. Been wondering about that myself.

Hi,
If your hand is slim enough to slip through the filler neck opening the strainer can usually be changed with the gas sender in place.
The fact that once your hand/arm is in place you can't see what you're doing makes it a little tricky.
Regards,
Alan

I just swapped out my send unit because the sock was clogged, I don't see anyway to do this without dropping the tank and pulling the send unit. I have a 76 so it may be different than yours...

I have a '74 and a '76. With catalytic convertes appearing on cars in '75 they also put a new device at the fuel filler to prevent inserting a nozzle that dispensed leaded gas. The opening on my '74 is huge by comparison. It looks like it was designed to take the gas cans they use to add gas to race cars. No way you replace the sock from above on anything newer than '74.

Hi,
Yes, the neck is wider on earlier cars.
From Mike's screen name I ASSumed he was asking about a 71 tank.
Regards,
Alan

Alan is correct my car is a 71 convertible. I haven't found anyone that has a small hand that is willing to place their hand in the opening. I'm thinking about modifing a plastic hose crimper (fuel line crimper).

I just went through this on my '72 a year or so ago - It was 5-steps easy:

1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal and disconnect the wire from the sending unit

2. Drain the gas. - It's really very easy to do with a piece of fuel line for a drain hose and a gas can. All you have to do is pull the line off the sending unit and put the drain hose on. Be quick though, and expect a little leakage before you get your thumb over the nipple.

3. Get a screwdriver and 'bump' the circle-holder-clamp thingy until it drops. (The technical term is "Gas Tank Sending Unit Cam Lock")

4. Pull out the sending unit, then swap out the sock

5. Reassemble in reverse order and put the gas back in the tank.

This, of course, assumes that your sending unit is on the bottom of the tank like mine is. This is a good time to replace the seal as well.

Hope that helps!

Just did this last night. And while you're at it... put fresh 3/8 fuel lines and fresh clamps.

I think I'll try to replace from the top at this time. But, I'm going to order the entire sending unit just in case this first approach doesn't work. At present I have 3/4 of a full tank. I'm more leaning to the removal of the sending unit when the fuel tank is almost empty. For now I'll try the top.. thanks for the aide
