I just took my value covers off for the first time. I discovered head numbers 3917291 and solid lifters. Specs show this could be either 300hp OR 350 hp. What do I have?

How could you tell it had solid lifters just by pulling a val(v)e cover? The solid-lifter LT1 from 1970 was rated at 375 hp, and it dropped year-to-year after that as compression ratios were lowered...

Hi tp,
The info I have indicates the heads with that casting number were used on 327ci 300 and 350 horsepower engines in 1968.
I believe both those engine's configurations used hydraulic lifters.
Regards,
Alan

tp, if you do in fact have solids they would be someone's addition. There was no solid lifter small block in 1968...just two 427s, the L-71 and the L-88, had solids. The 1970-1972 LT-1 350 small block had solids and ratings of 370 (70, gross), 330 (71, gross), and 255 hp (72, net).

I suppose if he checked the lash and found each valve had + - .020 lash, then you could make the determination that it was a solid cam, or a hydraulic out of adjustment

Yep, while we we're adjusting the valve lash we discovered they were solid lifters. Thanks for asnwering our question. Must have been the original owner.
