Default 1982 Wheels need balance

My wheels need to be rebalanced .Is there a preferred balance for the factory aluminum wheels.

My mechanic now uses a special soft weight strip that sticks to the inside horizontal surface of the wheel. Centrifugal forces also help hold it in place.
Many years ago, I discovered that the old style weights that clip onto the wheel rim can bend open like a butterfly's wings, if you drive fast enough. Just sayin'.

just got mine done on the 82 last month, when I purchased new tires. I asked and watched if they would balance from the inside only.
That is what they did and used the combo conventional weight, along with the stick-on weights. It took them a little longer and some of the wheels took 6 to 7 ounces to balance out to "0", but it worked out just fine. Next step would have been to reposition the tire on the wheel to get a better balance, but that was not necessary. And none of the wheels are bent. There is absolutely no vibration at any speed, even at the triple digit area on the speedo, so I am very happy with the results......
I also get a free rebalance in 90 days.....

went with the BFG's in the 255/60/15 size, and as I have mentioned in other tire threads, very happy with them, they seem to ride better than previous TA's that I have had on other vechicles, I'm thinking that they improved the compound in the tires....... and I always run 30 lbs pressure, never higher, as I feel that pressure gives you the best ride....

I have the same set up and had a helluva time getting someone to balance my wheel !!!

I finally went to my local Votech and we rotated the tire on the rim if it took more than 7 ounces until we got most of the wheels under 4 ounces.
Then we did a regular wheel balance (not mag wheel balance). The balance machine would call for ex;1 ounce inside.... 2 ounces outside . Usually just about in the same spot on the wheel so we went in from the back of the wheel and centered 3 ounces. While favoring towards the outside of the rim because it required 2 ounces.

A few hit and misses so use regular tape to hold the weights until you get it perfect and then pull the backing off the weights to stick them for good!

If it took "6-7 ounces" of weight, you've got a tire problem.....

I'm glad to hear that the tires are performing well. However, and I'm NOT trying to bust your chops, but any tire that's not a re-cap, and needs 6-7 oz. of weight to balance, has a manufacturing defect.

I used to have a part time business selling tires, and I've personally mounted/balanced several hundred tires. Any good tire will balance with 2.5-3 oz. of weight OR LESS.

Just giving you a "heads-up".......
