My 72 has developed a clunk in the rear suspension when I release the break and apply the throttle. It hard to describe but it is 1 solid clunk and a slight side to side shift, after making a complete stop. The movement I feel concerns me the most.
I have some other responsibilities this morning, but I am hope to get under it tonight. I am just looking to be pointed in the right direction.
Check the front forward bushings on the rear control arms. If they go bad, they will allow the control arms to move side-to-side changing your rear wheel's toe-in. This will make the car shift sideways under acceleration. Been there myself years ago.
Another source of the clunking could be a loose forward differential mount. If the bolts loosen up a bit, the forward mount underneath the driveshaft u-joint will shift slightly up & down, but makes a nice clunking sound.
