Default another ignition question ASAP

ok, i suspect my pertronix2 device is dead. i am going to put the points back in, but i have rewired the coil for 12v, as per what pertronix reccomended. will it hurt the points if i run for a few minutes on 12v, or do i need the lower voltage?

thanks

Yes you can do that. They get 12V. at start anyway. If you run for an extended legth of time (a few thousand miles) the points will burn. No problem for a test.

You may also burn up the coil.
The coil is ment to run at 6 volts, starting at 12 volts is only for us here in the artic tundra

Cam, Do you remember where the wire goes on the points? :) I didnt! But the pic in the service manual helped me out. Next question will be, is it dwell first or timing first? I think dwell affects timing so you set that first, then set the timing. I think..... :) Just went thru the same whole bs today. Was all packed and ready to go with my son to the track too! MJ :mad

I don't think they start good without 12v to the coil at start. The coil IS a 12v unit. The coil doesn't burn up when you wire it for 12v when installing the Pertronics set-up. Why would it burn up with points?? Besides that mine runs at almost 9 volts (I had it wired for Pertronics for about a year) and it is the ORIGINAL 69 coil. Anyone want my Pertronics II? I took it out after I started reading about all of the failures but it worked fine when I removed it. BTW.. The dwell affect the timing. Set it at 30 on a dwell meter, then set the timing. After that you can just re-adjust the dwell as needed and leave the timing alone.
