Another issue. Starter acts like it turning off a dead battery, barley turns for about 5 seconds then turns over fast. The battery check out ok, timing is at 14 degrees initial with vacuuming off. Is this a starter or electrical problem or something else?
Try turning on the headlights and cranking it. If the headlights dim a lot while it is barely cranking then the starter is pulling a lot of current and I would replace it. If the headlights do not dim then the starter isn't getting a lot of current.
I had the same problem. Sent my starter to the electrical shop, they tested it for free, it was bad. They rewound it and replaced the bendix for $75. No problems for 5 years since. (I hope I didn't jinx myself!)
You said your cables are good , have you replaced them ? I thought my ground to frame cable was good and it was actually corroded on the inside. If your batt is good, then test the starter. If its good, then one of your cables are bad.
Ok, there where this stands, replaced starter and the issue is still there. Borrowed a new battery and no difference. Has to be the cables, is there a way that I can test to see iif it is the negative or the positive? Can I run jumper cable from the positive terminal to the starter?
Where did you get the starter? When I replaced mine back in march from autozone I had it for a month and it started doing the same thing. Then the tooth gear on the bendix broke in half. I got another one and its been fine. Just offering possbilities
And make sure you placed those 2 small wires at 3 and 9 o'clock back correctly. and the ground too.
Here's a shot....see if the rotor is spinning when you try to turn it over.
I have a MSD HEI distributor and had a problem last year where the rotor and metal prong shattered inside the cap.
bench racing your problem and with my back alley know it all mechanical starting smarts, the conclusion is you need more starters as those you have are all chinese.......and Jegs special testing in a hot oven will let you pick the best heat soaked one...and those that stay cold are no good ither.......might have to change your motor
