Default brake problems

I own a 1972 corvette without power brakes. It has been in storage for about 1.5 years. The master cylinder had lost its brake fluid during storage in the front half of the cylinder. The back half is OK. I replaced the leaking right caliper and power bled the system. The brake pedal still initially goes all the way to the floor when pressed, but will then build pressure when pumped. As soon as I reduce pressure on the pedal, it goes all the way to the floor when I press again. What could be causing the problem?

Air in the system or a leak. It's probably air in the master cylinder. If it was empty it needs to be bench bled to get all the air out of it. The outlets are not at the very top of the piston bore so it needs to be tilted in order to get all the air out.

Another possibility is the master is bad, the rubber seals can break down and corrosion can build up in the bore of the master. When you press the pedal all the way to the floor the rubber seals on the piston scrape past the corrosion point and sustain further damage.

The front half of the master cylinder serves the front brakes. Check them first.
